Do you deserve a pat on the back?

To give – the dictionary defines this simply as to present voluntarily and without expecting compensation;
There is a debate around whether people who think they give (e.g. time, goods) but expect compensation in the form of a meal, or to be able to buy at a discount, or get free entertainment, are really giving. The above definition suggests perhaps they are not, but bartering their labour (albeit to the benefit of others).

However there are people in Buckland Brewer who still give – generously. Time to ensure the green looks nice, tending the beds by speed limit signs, making items for sale for charity, providing flowers in the church, mowing grass...the list is pretty long. The point is,who says thank you?
There is a great tendency to take, and to take for granted. It has been said by folk here that people should not be singled out for their contributions. Well, if they’re not singled out, simply by the use of those two words or the lack of them, sooner or later the giving will stop. And those who thought people shouldn’t be singled out will be wondering why, possibly looking for someone to blame (but never themselves), and the community at large will be the losers.
On behalf of all those who should say thanks and don’t, a big thank you from Community Website to all those in this community who genuinely give or their time, their labour, their basic consideration for other people – it is noticed and appreciated.
