Parish councillor is an unpaid local government role, and parish councils deal with a wide range of local issues, excluding those falling within the direct remit of district and county councils. It is important to point out that parish councils view planning applications prior to them being discussed by district council, acting in an advisory capacity only.

Geoffrey Cox lives in West Devon, near Tavistock, with his wife, Jeanie and his family. Geoffrey was born and brought up in the West Country, is the son of a soldier and his family have been Devonians for generations. He is strongly involved in the local community, and among other posts, is President of the Tavistock Football Club and a Vice President of the North Devon Hospice, which he named as his local charity.
